Debbie Zacarian, Ed.D.
CELE Director- Debbie Zacarian Ed.D. is the director of the Center for English Language Education at the Collaborative for Educational Services in Northampton, MA, a non-profit organization for improving teaching and learning through high-quality, evidence-based professional development and policy and practice consultation. Dr. Zacarian has authored numerous publications including Transforming Schools for English learners: a comprehensive framework for school leaders (2011); Teaching English Language Learners Across the Content Areas (2010); The Essential Guide for Educating Beginning English Learners (Corwin Press, forthcoming 2012) and Advancing Student Achievement (In Press, Corwin Press) and was a columnist for TESOL’s Essential Teacher. Her doctorate is in educational policy and research from the University of Massachusetts. She consults with state agencies and school districts in the United States on policies, programming, and professional development for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.
Dr. Zacarian co-wrote the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care’s policies for dual language learners and wrote Serving English Learners: laws, policies, and regulations a user-friendly guide about US federal laws, a project funded with support from the Carnegie Foundation for Colorín Colorado.

Curriculum and Instructional Specialists
Ken Pransky
Ken Pransky, Curriculum and Instruction Specialist, is nationally known for his work about culturally and linguistically diverse learners, especially students who struggle to perform successfully in school. His book, Beneath the Surface: the hidden realities of working with culturally and linguistically diverse young learners was published by Heinemann in 2008, and he has written several journal articles published by Educational Leadership, Reading Teacher, and Theory into Practice. He also has My Fantastic Words Book and Teacher’s Guide for Rich Vocabulary Instruction K-5: A Three-Stage Process (Pransky and Zacarian) forthcoming. In addition to 30+ years in the field of multicultural education, Ken is trained in all 3 levels of the Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment Program. Ken works with teachers of English learners. He also works extensively with schools that experience chronic underperformance challenges, providing professional development and coaching for general classroom, subject matter, resource, and specialist teachers in understanding students first, how memory systems function in learning, how academic language is learned, and in creating Mediated Learning Experiences for students.
Audrey Morse
- Audrey Morse, MS, CCC-SLP, Curriculum and Instruction Specialist, began work at CELE last fall. Audrey has extensive background as both a speech and language pathologist and an ESL teacher and has worked with students of all ages (preschool – adult) in early intervention, public school, and college based programs. She is especially passionate about supporting initiatives that empower the families of her students to be involved in educational and community programming, and to share the richness of their cultural backgrounds with others.

- Our trainers, instructors, and coaches have depth of experience as teachers and teacher trainers. They work closely with our director and curriculum and instruction staff to provide high quality trainings, instruction, coaching, and assessments.
